personal work

Overview

Some of the work is produced in the form of a series: where a single image may not be able to communicate the complete experience of a place. Images of frost, ice and sand are subject to chance or opportunity and it is gratifying to witness something so transient - knowing it will cease to exist only minutes or even seconds later.

More recently, I have been interested in our influences on the natural environment and curious about the more overlooked areas of landscape: places where we have either changed, modified or harnessed natural elements, where there is evidence of abuse or neglect and how nature has adapted to this intervention. Such fascination has also encouraged me to revisit some places many times in order to examine and document any changes that happen with time.

Work can be ongoing, whereby extra material will be added to an already established portfolio. The Sand work for example, was started whilst I was at Art College. I'm pleased that so many years later I am still drawn to the same subject, still curious about it and still exploring new possiblities.

Specific projects can have a narrative theme. An Urban River in 1998, was a three and a half year project exploring the route of the River Mersey from source to sea. It was a fascinating journey of an urban river through the North West of England. After a short tour the work was shown at the Lowry in August 2003.

Another narrative project "Flooded Woodland" was completed in 2006 and is a study of a wooded area susceptible to flooding and drought. This set of 15 huge panoramic images show the subtle changes and regeneration of a natural environment over the period of an entire year.

Other areas of interest are still life, industrial and abstract work.
