Overview

I have been working within the area of landscape photography for many years. Although the work has changed and matured throughout that time the areas of interest have remained the same and can be divided into two areas.

Firstly, I have a history of pursuing traditional elements such as frost, sand, ice, woodland, rock structures and the effects of water in the natural environment. I endeavour to keep the image simple, looking at the basics of form, colour, tone and texture. Sometimes work is produced in a 'series' in order to represent a more complete experience of a place. Images of frost and ice are invariably subject to chance or opportunity and it is gratifying to witness something so transient knowing it will cease to exist only minutes later.

Secondly, I have found our influence on the natural environment fascinating and feel drawn to the more overlooked areas of the landscape: places where we have either changed, modified or harnessed natural elements, or where there is evidence of abuse or neglect and how nature has adapted to this intervention. Such fascination has also encouraged me to return to places to look at the changes that happen with time.

Some of the work can be ongoing, whereby I will add extra material to an already established portfolio. The Sand work for example, was started whilst I was at Art College. I'm pleased that so many years later I am still drawn to the same subject, still curious about it and still exploring new possiblities.

Some specific projects have had a narrative theme. An Urban River in 1998, was a three and a half year project exploring the route of the River Mersey from source to sea. It was a fascinating journey of an urban river through the North West of England. The work has toured and was shown at the Lowry in August 2003.

More recently I embarked on another narrative project: Flooded Woodland. Completed in 2006, this was a study of a wooded area susceptible to flooding and drought, showing the subtle changes and regeneration of a natural environment over the period of an entire year.

Another area of interest is 'still life': these can be either found 'still-lifes' which are detailed studies photographed within the landscape or natural objects such as plants or stones which I have taken back to the studio.
